Back safety isn't just about heavy lifting.  Sometimes poor ergonomic habits alone are the culprit.  In the course of a day people whose work responsibilities don't typically involve lifting and other intense physical activity still find a way to damage their back.  The following are important ergonomic safety techniques and tips to keep your back healthy and should be incorporated into your company's back safety training.

  • Your back is designed to be in motion.  If your job involves sitting or standing for long periods of time in one position you are putting dangerous strain on your back.  Take frequent breaks to ease the strain that your sedentary job creates.
  • Bad posture is another reason people have back problems.  Always remember to sit up straight and stand tall.  When you are sitting make sure that your arms and legs are at right angles.  Sitting and standing this way is called the neutral position and it distributes your weight evenly.  These simple techniques to keep from slouching will help keep your back healthy. 
  • When sitting also make sure that your feet can rest flat on the floor.  When your legs don't reach the floor it puts a lot of stress on your lower back.  If your feet don't reach, find a footrest.  Your back will thank you.
  • If your lower back needs support find a roll up a towel, small pillow or purchase a lumbar cushion that is specifically designed for the job.
  • Avoid overstretching.  Keeping your tool, papers and computer close enough is imperative - 15-20 inches is the ideal distance.
  • Standing can put huge strain on your back.  Putting one of your feet on a step or a stool regains the natural curve of your spine and takes stress off your back.
  • Take breaks and walk around the office or work site.
